Lenique Vogel and Elaine Haycock demonstrated their goal-scoring skills to help Hoërskool Waterkloof register back-to-back victories over St Andrew’s School for Girls and St Mary’s Waverley on Friday night and Saturday morning, respectively.
Coach Omari Pienaar-Geyer‘s charges defeated St Andrew’s 2-0 on the Klofies’ Astro, before travelling to St Mary’s Waverley, where they defeated the hosts 3-1.
Klofies headed into the contests buoyed by a comprehensive 9-0 victory over Zwartkop in which Vogel, who was picked for the Northerns u18A SASHOC Inter-Provincial team, led the scoring with a hat-trick. Dania Opperman slotted a brace, while Elaine Haycock, Alba Lambinon, Nicole Smuts, and Mila Badenhorst chimed in with a goal each.
St Andrew’s provided a sterner test than Zwartkop. The visitors gave as much as they received throughout the first half, and the sides headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0. The halftime team-talk, however, appeared to inspire the Klofies, who came out firing and opened the scoring through Elaine Haycock six minutes into the third chukka.
A one-goal lead wasn’t a comfortable advantage, so Waterkloof pressed hard for a second goal. St Andrew’s, though, had done their homework and denied Klofies until four minutes from full-time when Lenique Vogel drilled the ball past the St Andrew’s goalkeeper to secure the win.

On Saturday, Waterkloof made a 46km trip to St Mary’s Waverley, and they made it count, too, recording a comfortable win over the hosts. The visitors started somewhat slowly against the home team, who were spurred on by strong support.
However, Waterkloof soon found their rhythm and drew first blood, courtesy of a Lenique Vogel strike five minutes into the second chukka. That was the first of three goals scored by the Pretoria school in the quarter.
Haycock doubled the visitors’ lead three minutes later when she tapped the ball into the back of the net from close range after a brilliant build-up by the Klofies, who kept St Mary’s under pressure and nabbed a third goal through Renske Smit in the final seconds of the chukka.
Despite falling behind by three goals, St Mary’s kept their heads down and worked hard, launching several attacking forays. Their persistence led to the last four minutes of the game being played deep in Waterkloof’s half, and it brought the hosts a consolation goal in the last seconds of the match.
Waterkloof faces another back-to-back challenge in the coming week. They take on Menlopark on Friday, then face Midstream College on Saturday.
