Hoërskool Waterkloof’s AJ de Villiers and Juan Swart both scored double centuries at the St David’s Marist Inanda Fasken Time Cricket Festival on Saturday, tearing apart Hoërskool Noordheuwel‘s bowling attack.
Waterkloof won the toss at the Gier Oval and chose to bat. That proved to be a very good decision.
In only 86 overs, Klofies romped to a mammoth 498/2. By stumps, Nories had posted 162/4 in reply, leaving them 336 runs in arrears.
De Villiers recorded the highest individual score of the festival thus far, finishing with an unbeaten 217 from 190 deliveries, which included 35 fours and a single six.
Swart was even more aggressive, blasting 11 sixes and 23 fours as he raced to 206 from 158 balls. Together, he and De Villiers shared a huge 376-run second-wicket partnership in only 51 overs.
Noordheuwel was shocked to lose a wicket in the first over of their reply. However, they quickly recovered with Liams Roets (67) and Logan Swart (48*) combining for 113 runs for the second wicket. It was a quick riposte, but Nories then lost three wickets in quick succession as Waterkloof pressed home their advantage.
Jean Cloete led the Klofies’ bowling, snapping up 2/10, while Vorster de Villiers and Luan Smith claimed a wicket each.
Jeppe vs Lions Invitational XI
Jeppe High School for Boys performed well with both bat and ball to grab a sound 211-run lead over the Lions Invitational XI in their contest on the La Rosey Oval at St David’s.
Zuan Joubert, the Lions’ captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first. Jeppe answered the call with verve, charging to 404/5 in 70 overs before restricting the Lions Invitational XI to 193/5 at stumps.
Ethan van Dyk led the charge for Jeppe with an evenly paced 166 from 183 balls, striking 20 fours and two sixes. Zizi Mkhize (95) and Ahmed Goolam (50*) chipped in with impressive half-centuries.
Joubert led the Lions’ reply with a lively 52 from only 40 balls. Bulumko Magatya made a brisk 39 from 29 balls, and Heinrich Minnaar was unbeaten on 37 off 39 deliveries.
The wickets were shared between the Jeppe bowlers, who prevented their opposition from gaining momentum for extended periods.
St John’s College vs Clifton College
St John’s won the toss, chose to bat first, and totalled a healthy 341/7 in their match against Clifton on the Mitchell Oval at St John’s. By stumps, the men from KZN had reached 137/4, still trailing by 204 runs.
Most of St John’s top order batsmen made starts, but only Joshua Hall was able to convert his score beyond a half-century. Batting at five, he compiled an unbeaten 89 from 128 balls. Nkosana Sibiya and Herman Basson each scored 46 runs, while Tapiwa Chikwava contributed 44 runs.
Clifton had four batsmen go past the 20-run mark, but none made it to 40. Shreyan Singh top-scored with a patient 34 from 94 deliveries, while Shiraz Perumal made 29 from 49. Daniyaal Klink and Muhammed Malek contributed 27 and 24 runs, respectively.
Middelburg Hoërskool vs St David’s Marist Inanda
Middelburg Hoërskool will take a 42-run lead over St David’s into Sunday, the second day of their contest on the La Valla Oval.
Middies‘ skipper Gavin Genis won the toss and chose to bat first. His team responded by tallying 263/6 in 52 overs. The hosts were on 222/8 at stumps in their reply.
Eduan Strydom made a well-paced 96 from 116 balls at the top of the order, while Nijan Swart complemented the Middelburg opener with an unbeaten 81 from 69. Genis (45) and Frederik Boshoff (23) contributed a combined 68 runs.
St David’s struggled to get into stride in their reply because they lost early wickets, but Matthew Nicholson stabilised their innings with a solid 50 off 82 balls.
He received good support from Benjamin Meyersfield, lower down the order, who made a valuable and unbeaten 54 from 102 deliveries. Didintle Kotsedi (24) and Ayabulela Adonis (24*) were the only other batsmen to make it beyond the teens.
