Dale College was crowned the Clover High School Sevens Series‘ Lilyfontein Sevens‘ U17 champion on Saturday, while Graeme College staged a successful defence of the U15 title.
Last year, when Cambridge High captured the U17 title, Dale wasn’t in action. This year, Cambridge missed the event, and Dale grabbed their opportunity with both hands.
They dominated Group C before withstanding tough challenges from Port Rex in the quarterfinals and Stirling High in the semifinals. They went on to comfortably defeat Ooskus Gim 33-12 in the final.
Dale’s toughest game was in the semi-finals, where they edged out Stirling 27-24. Ooskus, meanwhile, had to take a roundabout trip to the title game.
Playing in Group B, they suffered a 17-26 loss to Hudson Park after opening with a 24-19 win over Lilyfontein. That left them with a Cup quarterfinal clash against the Group A winner, Queen’s College. There, they ousted Dale’s arch-rival, scoring a tight 28-24 win.
That victory set Ooskus Gim up for a semifinal showdown against Hudson Park, the winner of Group B, who had seen off Victoria Park 33-14 in the quarterfinals. In another surprise, Ooskus handed Hudson a 26-19 loss.
Hudson Park’s consolation was a 27-17 win over Hangklip in the Plate final, while George Randell bagged the Bowl with a 29-14 defeat of De Vos Malan.
The Shield was shared after a 19-19 draw between Lilyfontein and the Kwelera Invitational side.
Dale College came close to winning both the U17 and U15 titles, but they fell two points short against the eventual champion, Graeme College, in the U15 semi-finals, going down 31-33 in a cracking match.
Graeme cruised through Group A, outplaying Lilyfontein by 31 points and Stirling by 38. Meanwhile, in Group C, Queen’s College overran De Vos Malan 62-7 before slipping past Ooskus Gim 19-14. Dale won Group B, with hard-fought wins over Stutterheim and Victoria Park, while Group D belonged to Hudson Park, who overcame Hangklip and Port Rex.
All four group winners were victorious in the Cup quarterfinals, with Stutterheim putting up a good fight against Graeme before the Makhanda school triumphed 33-19.
While Graeme sneaked past Dale in the semi-finals, Queen’s College ground out a tight 14-7 win over Hudson Park.
In the final, Graeme made it back-to-back titles with a 31-19 win over Queen’s.
Ooskus Gim held off Stirling, winning the Plate final 17-14, while Victoria Park eased to a 19-point win over Hangklip in the Bowl final, and Lilyfontein ensured the hosts won some silverware, beating De Vos Malan in the Shield final.
