As the rest of the nation celebrated Youth Day on Tuesday, the Gauteng Development League (GDL) featured a high-profile showdown between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns at Clapham High in Pretoria.
The clubs’ u14, u15, u17, and u19 teams took to the field in one of the country’s fiercest football rivalries, leading to 18 goals being scored.

The u14 game got the action going, and the teams combined for a nine-goal thriller, with Mamelodi Sundowns scoring a narrow 5-4 victory in a highly competitive encounter.
Tinotenaishe Shuro and Mpilo Nxumalo each netted two goals for the Brazilians, while the fifth goal was an own goal credited to Chiefs’ Jayden Tsvangira. The visitors’ goals came from Austin McCarthy, Boikgantsho Mphahlele, Setou Tshep, and Tsvangira.
Despite the defeat, Kaizer Chiefs maintained their position at the top of the u14 GDL table with 39 points, but following Tuesday’s loss, Sundowns has reduced the gap to six points.
In the u15 division, while fewer goals were scored, the match was intense. It ended 1-1, with Thabang Qina equalising for Sundowns in the 78th minute after the Phefeni Glamour Boys had taken an early lead in the first half through a goal by Inganathi Saliwa.
Following the draw, Mamelodi Sundowns tops he u15 GDL table after 13 matches, with 37 points, while Chiefs are in hot pursuit, with 34 points.
In the u17 clash, Bafana Ba Style, the table-toppers, dominated second-placed Kaizer Chiefs, scoring a 3-0 victory.
Luthando Mkhize opened the scoring for Sundowns in the 20th minute of the match, assisted by Avela Tenza. During additional time in the second half, Tenza scored a goal of his own. Then, a minute before the match concluded, Omphemetse Sekgoto netted ‘Downs‘ third.
Despite the comfortable margin of victory, it was anything but a straightforward win for the Brazilians, who were reduced to 10 players in the 38th minute of the first half.
Ahead of the big u19 clash, Chiefs had not picked up a victory. They were also under pressure to win because, although they occupied for first place in the standings with 29 points, they were ahead of Rockefvs only on goal difference. Meanwhile, a win for Sundowns, who started the contest on 28 points, would elevate them from third to first place.
From the start, the AmaKhosi imposed themselves on their hosts, leading to a 4-0 victory.
Just three minutes into the match, Malibonge Mtshali struck, giving the visitors the lead. Two minutes into the second half, he netted his second.
Shortly after Sundowns had a penalty appeal rejected by the referee, Samkelo Msimango rubbed salt in the Sundowns’ wounds with Chiefs’ third goal. Twelve minutes from the end, Chiefs’ captain Keamogetswe Moilwa completed the scoring in an emphatic victory for the visitors.
The victory over the reigning champions elevated the Chiefs’ total to 32 points after 14 matches.
This upcoming Saturday, they’ll have the chance to increase their lead when they welcome the University of Pretoria (Tuks) to Naturena Village.
Rockefvs will hope their Pretoria neighbours beat Chiefs. If they win against the Prestige Football Development Academy at Hoërskool Die Burger, they would tie the Phafeni Glamour Boys on 32 points.
Sundowns will aim to return to winning ways against Seven’s Academy at Clapham High on Saturday. They’ll take on Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) at the same venue on Sunday.
Fourth-placed Siwelele faces Kathorus Hyper Academy at Huntersfield in Katlehong.
