On Sunday, St Benedict’s College captured the St David’s Marist Inanda Challenge Cup, beating St John’s College 2-0 in the final.

Bennies had previously claimed the title in 2017. On this occasion, they were unbeaten throughout the tournament.

After scoring a narrow 1-0 victory over St Alban’s College in Saturday’s quarterfinals, they charged into the final with a 5-0 victory over St Peter’s College in the semifinals on Sunday.

Their title game opponents, St John’s College, also performed strongly during the tournament.

They were, however, made to work hard in the quarterfinals, where they got by Hilton College 1-0.

It was even tighter in the semifinals, where, after a tense penalty shootout, St John’s eliminated the hosts, St David’s. It ended 7-6 from the spot after regulation time had finished in a goalless draw.

In the final, Bennies stunned St John’s College by scoring a goal in the very first minute of the match, quickly followed by another goal shortly thereafter.

St John’s College found themselves chasing the game. They came close to scoring but were unable to breach the resolute St Benedict’s defence.

St David’s went on to win bronze, but they had to dig deep in their playoff clash with St Peter’s, who led 2-1 at halftime. The hosts responded with two goals in the second stanza to claim a come-from-behind 3-2 win.
