Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom, who suffered a tight 10-run defeat to Hoërskool Hans Moore on Thursday, recorded their first win of the Wildeklawer Diamantveld T20 on Friday morning, beating Somerset College by 31 runs at the Sol Plaatje University.

Volkies posted 169/5 in their 20 overs, with AW van der Merwe leading the charge. He laid into the Somerset College bowlers, smashing eight sixes and two fours in a rapid 71 off 44 balls.

Van der Merwe was set up for success by the opening pair of Riekert Kruger and Theunis Nel, who put on 53 for the first wicket in six overs before Nel fell to a combination of Johann Rauch and Ave Nkantini for 29. Kruger was out five runs later to the same pair for 25, with Nkantini going on to claim 2/22 from his four overs.

Like Ave Nkantini, David de Klerk also dismissed two batsmen, but he went for 43 runs from his four overs.

Somerset College’s reply ended with them losing their last wicket to the last ball of the match, all out for 137 after 20 overs.

They started their run chase well, with Owethu Moyi and Mark Pyle sharing a 59-run opening stand before Moyi fell in the eighth over for the innings’ top score of 35. He had faced only 18 deliveries and struck four fours and two sixes.

Pyle helped the score to 85 before he lost his wicket, out for a watchful 28. Jono Searle, with 19, was the next-highest scorer as four Volkskool bowlers claimed two wickets apiece.

Juan van Niekerk claimed his in only one over, finishing with 2/3, while Olefa Padi picked up 2/22 in four, and Andries Venter 2/32 from four. Schalk Pienaar ended with 2/18 as Volkies won comfortably.

Paarl Gimnasium vs Northern Cape Hub XI

Paarl Gimnasium bagged their second win on the trot at the Wildeklawer Diamantveld T20, outplaying the Northern Cape Hub XI by 96 runs at the Diamond Oval on Friday morning.

Enré van Zyl, their top scorer in a 16-run win over HTS Drostdy, was again their leading scorer, this time making 69, one less than he made against Drostdy. Again, he was not out. His runs came from 57 deliveries and included five fours.

Paul Schoeman followed up his 48 on Thursday with 45 on Friday before being bowled by Obakeng Peme for 45 off only 36 balls as Gimmies finished with 152/3 from their 20 overs.

Three bowlers claimed a wicket each, with Ntebogang Motihabane returning 1/26 from four overs, Lefika Matlhoko 1/30 from his four, and Obakeng Peme 1/20 from three.

The Hub side’s reply floundered from the start, and none of their batsmen made more than single figures. Extras, with 18, were the highest contributor to the local team’s 56 all out.

Opening bowler Nico Smit knocked over 2/5, Thomas Wiersma took 2/4, and De Waal Vivier picked up 2/3, while two run outs further undermined the Hub’s batting effort. They were all out after 15 overs.

St Patrick’s CBC vs Parel Vallei High

St Patrick’s CBC shocked Stellenberg High on the opening day of the Wildeklawer Diamantveld T20, but Parel Vallei High (PV) made short work of the local side at CBC on Friday, charging to a 10-wicket victory.

St Patrick’s mustered only 72/9 in their 20 overs as the PV attack bowled economically as a unit. Daniel Dreyer, with 3/5 from three overs, undermined CBC’s batting efforts, while Gideon de Bruyn chipped in with 2/22.

Only two CBC batsmen made it beyond single figures. Faizaan Kajee top-scored with 24 from 38 balls, while Omphile Magwaca contributed 20 from the same number of deliveries.

Somerset College then raced to victory in only nine overs. While Chris Hughes held down one end, making 18 from 22 balls, Nicolae Roux went after the St Patrick’s bowlers, crushing four sixes and four fours in a 32-ball innings that brought him 56 not out.
