Hoërskool Outeniqua claimed the honours in a George rivalry on Thursday, winning by 47 runs at York High in a rain Schools SA20 clash.

After winning the toss, Outeniqua chose to bat first, but found it hard going at the crease. By the sixth over, they were knee-deep in the mud, on 29/5.

At last, though, they gained some traction when Daniel du Preez, at four, and JD Marais, at seven, combined for a much-needed 51-run sixth-wicket stand.

They were the only Outeniqua batsmen to score more than a dozen runs. Du Preez hit the only six of his team’s innings in his 25 off 26, while Marais struck four fours in his run-a-ball 38.

The visitors lost their last wicket off the last ball of their 20 overs, dismissed for 121.

York High opening bowler, Ethan Botha, captured a miserly 3/13 from his four overs, while his new ball partner, Jordan Ross, returned a neat 2/15. Christian van Zyl chipped in with 2/33.

Botha continued his good work with the bat. Opening the York innings, he stroked three fours in an innings of 20 off 28 deliveries. Fagan Hofstra top-scored with a patient 28 from 40 deliveries, and the pair added 53 for the third wicket.

The other eight partnerships tallied only 26 runs together, however, and York was restricted to just 74/9, leaving Outeniqua with a comfortable 47-run win.

The Kwaggas’ opening bowler Johalin Oosthuizen was on fire and responsible for most of the home side’s batting problems, knocking over 5/11 in four overs. Rikus Human played his part, too, claiming 2/12 in four.

Summarised Scorecard:

Hoërskool Outeniqua 121/10 (JD Marais 38, Daniel du Preez 25; Ethan Botha 3/13, Jordan Ross 2/15, Christian van Zyl 2/33). York High 74/9 (Fagan Hofsta 28, Ethan Botha 20; Johalin Oosthuizen 5/11, Rikus Human 2/12). Outeniqua won by 47 runs.
