The Gauteng Development League (GDL) underwent a shake-up on the weekend.
Kaizer Chiefs lost, and Mamelodi Sundowns won, resulting in the Brazilians leapfrogging the Phefeni Glamour Boys and taking over first place in the standings.
On Saturday, playing at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena, Kaizer Chiefs suffered a surprising loss to Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), going down 1-2.
That defeat opened the door for the 2025 league champions to move to the top of the standings for the first time in their 2026 campaign.
Sundowns also had home-ground advantage, but they made it count, scoring a 5-2 victory over Prestige Football Development Academy at Clapham High School.
Karabo Modika opened the scoring, slotting a penalty kick three minutes into the contest. Towards the end of the first half, Inganathi Simama made it 2-0.
After an hour, Modika struck again, before Siyabonga Mbongo and Ukhonkosi Sihlahla added two more as Sundowns ran out comfortable winners.
Hlulani Ndamase set up Mthokozisi Hlatshwayo and Abram Masweu for Prestige’s replies.
Randburg stayed in third after a 0-0 draw against Kathorus Hyper Academy. Rockefvs, in fourth, secured a 2-0 triumph over Jomo Cosmos.
Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF) handed fifth-placed Siwelele a 1-0 loss, but remained in 13th place.
Highlands Park, the 2025 runner-up, has had an inconsistent season. They appear to be out of the running for the title, but a top-eight finish and a place in next season’s Top Eight knockout competition could be achieved. They drew 1-1 with Seven’s Academy.
Future of Africa edged out Panorama 2-1, while Joburg City beat Africa School of Excellence 1-0 on Sunday.
