The Gauteng Development League (GDL) is approaching the midpoint of the 2026 season, with Kaizer Chiefs topping the u19 division after weeks of Rockefvs holding first place.
On the weekend, the Phefeni Glamour Boys hosted the University of Pretoria (Tuks) at Naturena on Saturday, where the teams shared a 1-1 draw.
Segopotso Phenkola kept the hosts from bagging three points by netting for the visitors. Had they won, Chiefs, who thumped the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, 4-0 on Youth Day, would have gone three points clear of the Brazilians.
Bafana Ba Style, coming off that heavy defeat at the hands of Chiefs at Clapham High, returned to their home field on Sunday to face Seven’s Academy. They scored a 3-1 victory to move up to 31 points and second place on the table, just two points behind the AmaKhosi.
Sipho Mkhwanazi opened the scoring for Sundowns just two minutes after kickoff, assisted by Junior Masoeu. Mkhwanazi added his second five minutes before halftime after being set up by Fusi Mokhampane. The Brazilians added a third goal, thanks to an own goal by Seven’s Academy, just before the end of the game.
Sundowns have faced disciplinary challenges in their recent outings, as evidenced by the number of red cards issued to their players within a week. In their match against Chiefs last week, several red cards were shown to their players in the u15 division, and during the game against Seven’s Academy, Sivuziwe Lonzi also received a red card in the first half. That should raise concerns for Sundowns, even though their coaching staff may feel aggrieved by the decisions made by the match officials.
Rockefvs, who have enjoyed a successful run in recent weeks, leading to them spending time at the top of the u19 standings, have now slipped to third place following a 0-2 defeat to the Prestige Football Development Academy.

On paper, considering their recent performances, Rockefvs was favoured heading into the match. Football in the GDL is unpredictable, however, and Prestige picked up the points.
Siwelele, whose form has fallen off since they suffered a 0-3 defeat to Randburg earlier this month, dropped points against Kathorus Hyper Academy at the Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.
The ninth-placed Kathorus won 2-0, but Siwelele maintained their fourth position. Tumelo Mokoena starred for the winners, contributing two assists, with Mojalefa Nyelele and Lefa Radikgomo netting.
Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) has, thus far, been relatively quiet, but they have picked up steam gradually, and they entered the top five, ousting Randburg from that position, after beating Randburg 1-0.
Only one point separates the sides, with RESA on 26 and Randburg, in sixth, on 25. Just ahead of them, Siwelele holds down fourth place on 27 points, and Rockefvs lies third, with 29 points. With half the season’s fixtures yet to be played, the race for the title remains wide open.
On Saturday, the Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF) played to a 3-3 draw against Joburg City. PMYF, which took over from East Rand Athletic Club, had a challenging start to the season and was positioned at the bottom of the GDL table. However, they have since improved to the 14th position.
They’ll need to maintain a similar level of performance across all age groups to ensure their GDL survival, which also applies to clubs like Seven’s Academy, which currently occupies the last spot on the u19 table.
The 2023-2024 GDL champions and 2025 runners-up, Highlands Park, have experienced an unusually quiet and challenging season thus far. They tend to come on strongly in the latter part of their campaigns. Following a 1-0 victory over Future of Africa on Saturday, they’re now in eighth place with 20 points.
Jomo Cosmos delivered an impressive performance on Saturday, securing a 3-1 victory over Wits Juniors, with Nyakalo More netting two goals, while Kaelo Sono sealed the deal for EzeNkosi with their third.
On Sunday, Panorama outlasted Africa School of Excellence 1-0, with Goanetse Tatsi scoring the only goal of the match. Prestige and Wits returned to the field after their Saturday matches and played to a 1-1 draw.
