Kaizer Chiefs head into the Gauteng Development League‘s (GDL) mid-season break with 39 points, giving them the league lead by eight points over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys boosted their advantage when they played twice on the weekend and scored victories in both matches.
On Saturday, Chiefs increased their points total from 33 to 36 with a commanding 5-2 win over Seven’s Academy at the Woodlands Sports Arena in Boksburg.
The following day, Amakhosi returned to their home ground and further extended their lead over the defending champions, Sundowns. In a closely contested match against Kathorus Hyper Academy, Kaizer Chiefs nabbed a 2-1 victory, earning three crucial points to reinforce their position as log leaders.
Kathorus dropped points on Sunday, but they ran out the 1-0 winner over Africa School of Excellence on Saturday at Elandsfontein, with Mojalefa Nyelele netting the winning goal, assisted by Tumelo Mokoena.
Panorama scored a 2-0 victory over Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA). Alex Damon set up Goanetse Tsatsi for the opener, and Kayle Thomas played in Vukhona Mawila for the Roodepoort-based club’s second goal, which made sure of the victory.
After a 2-2 draw with Prestige Football Development Academy, Randburg slipped back to the fifth position, with RESA leapfrogging them into fourth. Mduduzi Sindelo netted both goals for Prestige, bringing them back level on both occasions.
Siwelele, who started the season strongly to make the early running at the top of the table, has recently experienced a decline in their performance. Despite that, the Pretoria club remains in the top five after a goalless draw against Jomo Cosmos on Saturday.
