Twenty-two weeks have passed, and the Sowetan club, Kaizer Chiefs, continues to lead the Gauteng Development League (GDL) following a 5-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos on Saturday at Die Fakkel Sports Ground.
With 49 points, Amakhosi are at the top of the u19 GDL standings. They’ve maintained that position for most of the season after they entered the mid-year break as the league leaders.
The defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, are eight points behind Chiefs. On Sunday at Balfour Park, the Brazilians and the 2025 GDL runner-up, Highlands Park, played to a 1-1 draw.
Highlands Park, one of the league’s most consistent and best teams in recent seasons, won the title in 2023 and 2024, but this year it has been a slow grind. In typical fashion, though, the Lions of the North are picking up the pace in the second half of their campaign, and they’re now up to seventh place, with 30 points.
They’re just three points behind the Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), who scored a 2-0 victory over Siwelele on Saturday.
RESA, based in Vereeniging, produced an impressive performance against Siwelele, scoring both of their goals in the first half of the match. Ensle Oliphant found the net within the first six minutes, assisted by Brian Molefe. Later, Molefe turned provider, setting up Pontsho Zaba for RESA’s second.
Siwele, who led the league early in the season, is now down to fifth place.
Randburg trails only Chiefs and Sundowns. They’re third with 36 points after recording a narrow 1-0 victory over the University of Pretoria (Tuks) on Saturday.
Rockefvs, a surprising contender this season, is in fourth. In just their second season in the GDL, the Pretoria club has exceeded expectations. On Saturday, though, they were beaten by the bottom of the table, Seven’s Academy, losing 1-3. After 20 matches, Seven’s Academy has only 10 points.
In other matches played on Saturday, Panorama claimed a 2-1 victory over Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF), Wits Juniors picked up a 3-1 win over Prestige Football Development Academy, and Kathorus Hyper Academy beat Joburg City 3-1.
On Sunday, PMYF bounced back with a 2-1 win over Prestige, who suffered back-to-back losses.
