Hoërskool Durbanville‘s Juan van Coller hammered five fours and five sixes while scoring a century against Hoërskool Swartland on Saturday.
Playing on his home ground, the opener led the way for Durbies, with his 109 off 107 balls helping his side to 316/6 from their 50 overs.
MJ Kotze, at four, missed out on a fifty by one run, and he and Van Coller shared a third-wicket stand worth 92 runs.
Kotze also enjoyed a 79-run fifth-wicket partnership with Erich Vermeulen, who bludgeoned seven fours and four sixes, contributing a hasty 67 off 40 balls, the second-highest innings of the game.
Swartland’s opening bowlers, Hugo Jurgens and Du Preez Erasmus, claimed two wickets apiece, but they were also expensive, with Erasmus taking 2/69 in 10, and Jurgens 2/81, also from 10.
Faced with a required run rate of 6.34 runs per over over 50 overs, Swartland crumbled in the face of Durbanville’s concerted attack.
The Rockies’ top scorer was also their first batsman to face a ball, with Liam Campbell sending three deliveries to the boundary in his 14 off 15, but Durbies grabbed control and didn’t let up until victory was secured.
Jeandré Janse van Rensburg bowled six overs, two of which were maidens, and captured 4/17. Erich Vermeulen also sent four batsmen on their way, claiming 4/25 from his six overs.
Kruger Kirsten surrendered only three runs from 3.4 overs and picked up two wickets as Swartland was brushed aside for only 57 in 18.4 overs, leaving Hoërskool Durbanville with a handsome 259-run win.
Hoërskool Brackenfell hosted Curro Durbanville and sent the visitors in to bat first after winning the coin toss.
Curro found it tough at the crease. Their innings lasted into the 34th over of their allotted 50 and produced 139 runs.
A 56-run sixth-wicket stand between JP Smith, at six, and Malan Prinsloo, at seven, was their most fruitful period in the middle. Smith top-scored, hitting five fours in his 48 off 57, while Prinsloo stroked three fours in an otherwise cautious 25 off 51.
Brakkies had a trio of bowlers who excelled. Taige van Niekerk led the way, knocking over 4/29 after bowling six overs in the early part of the Curro innings. Noah Holtzhausen nabbed 3/20 during the middle overs, and Luan Horn wrapped up the innings by claiming 2/6.
Brackenfell’s openers, Kyle Kleinhans and Dean Hattingh, were more than up for the challenge set for them by Curro. They settled in, worked diligently, and steered their side to a 10-wicket win when they reached 140 without loss in the 34th over.
Kleinhans faced 94 balls and made 54, with six fours and a six. Hattingh contributed 55 off 109 deliveries and matched Kleinhans’s tally of six fours.
Neither batsman was able to get on top of Keenan Moore, whose seven overs included three maidens and cost him only 10 runs. However, Curro needed wickets, and they went wicketless.
