Durban High School (DHS) beat Hilton College 5-3 in Botha’s Hill on Saturday to win the Kearsney Hockey Fives for a second successive year.

The girls’ competition produced its fourth champion since they were added to the event in 2023, with Our Lady of Fatima edging out St Mary’s DSG (Kloof) 1-0 in the title game. St Mary’s was the defending champion.

Interestingly, when DHS and Hilton met in the round-robin phase of the competition, Hilton triumphed 5-4, while St Mary’s DSG beat Our Lady of Fatima 2-0 earlier on Saturday. DHS and Our Lady of Fatima delivered when it mattered, however.

Up to the final, St Mary’s was the only team in either the boys’ or girls’ competition that was undefeated. In the end, though, every side tasted defeat at least once.

Hilton had gone through the opening day with a clean record but twice came out on the wrong side of the result on Saturday, including in the final.

The host, Kearsney, was another team to lose but then turn the tables on the side that had earlier beaten them in the playoffs.

They played two tight matches against their neighbours, Westville Boys’ High, going down 3-4 at 13:00, but then beating Westville 4-3 at 16:00. That second result secured third place for Kearsney.

Third place in the girls’ competition went to Curro Hillcrest, who produced their best-ever finish at the Kearsney Sevens.

They rose to the challenge on Saturday, beating Ashton International College (Ballito) 4-3 before downing the 2024 winner, Danville Park Girls’ High, in the playoff for third.

Glenwood High caught the eye, too, convincingly beating previously undefeated Hilton College 6-3 after losing 3-6 to Westville less than two hours earlier.

They went on to finish fifth after a 5-3 victory over Michaelhouse.

Fifth in the girls’ competition went to Ashton, who won 4-2 against Maris Stella.
