In an electrifying encounter in which the outcome remained in doubt until the final seconds, Dale College produced a defensive masterclass to edge out Kingswood College 36-35 in their King Price Derby Series clash at City Lords in Makhanda on Tuesday.

Just three days after holding off St Andrew’s College in a dramatic 42-36 victory, the Dalians again showed remarkable composure and commitment under pressure to secure what was arguably their finest performance of the season.

Trailing by a single point, Kingswood dominated territory during the final five minutes and looked poised to complete a remarkable comeback after having trailed 21-36 midway through the second half.

From a five-metre lineout, the home side launched wave after wave of attacks at the Dale line, but each surge was met by a defence determined not to yield.

Eventually, the visitors gained a crucial breakthrough when Kingswood knocked the ball on. Although there were still several anxious moments to navigate, Dale finally managed to scramble the ball into touch to seal a memorable victory.

With their structured approach and cohesive forward play, the Kingswoodians were dangerous every time they entered the Dale 22. After conceding a try in the 40th minute to fall 15 points behind, they responded with tremendous character to haul themselves back into contention.

James and Josh Mackenzie, Junior Ndlazi, and Luniko Marivate were prominent throughout, constantly testing the visitors’ defensive resolve. Yet it was Dale’s defence that ultimately proved decisive.

Having built their lead through clinical finishing and enterprising rugby, they elevated their defensive intensity in the second half, repeatedly bringing down their rampaging opponents to preserve their narrow advantage.

Kingswood flyhalf Chris Zimmerman also made a significant contribution, controlling territory with his tactical kicking while maintaining a flawless record from the tee with five conversions.

As has been the case throughout the season, Dale were at their most dangerous when punishing mistakes in open play.

Fullback Caleb Smith capitalised on a loose pass to intercept for his first try before producing one of the moments of the match. Launching an attack from deep inside their own 22, the Dalians swept downfield, and Smith was on hand to take the final pass before racing away for a thrilling try beneath the posts.

Scrumhalf Lukho Mzingaye was another constant thorn in Kingswood’s side. His sharp breaks around the fringes repeatedly unsettled the home defence and earned him two well-deserved tries.

At flyhalf, Sonwabise Dyani confirmed his general skills, slotting four conversions and a penalty as he delivered his usual influence off the kicking tee.

In the end, however, it was Dale’s refusal to crack under immense late pressure that defined a gripping contest and secured a victory that will rank among their most satisfying of the year.

Scorers:

Dale College 36 (29) – Tries: Lukho Mzingaye (2), Caleb Smith (2), Achumile George. Penalty: Sonwabise Dyani. Conversions: Dyani (4). Kingswood College 35 (21) – Tries: James Mackenzie, Sandi Peter, Josh Mackenzie, Luniko Marivate, Charl du Toit. Conversions: Chris Zimmerman (5).
