Fullback Shandley Burrows has been a prolific try-scorer for Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr over the past two seasons. It was, therefore, not much of a surprise when he was crowned the King of the Match on Saturday, even though he didn’t score a try.
Burrows contributed 12 points from three conversions and two penalties, which proved vital in his side’s 27-26 victory at Hoërskool Robertson.
Robbies outscored the visitors by four tries to three, but Burrows’ boot made the difference.
The home side’s flyhalf Jaydan (Trailer) van Niekerk had a stellar game, launching many quick counterattacks and also poked through a cheeky grubber for left-wing Braydon Joseph to score.
Roberston’s counterattacking was impressive, with their backline producing some highlight reel moments.
Outside centre Gaywen Philander stepped his defender in a one-on-one to make the dive for five, while scrumhalf Dihego Braaf and right-wing Jo-Haylin Jansen also weaved past a defender or two on their way to scoring tries.
Unfortunately for the hosts from the Robertson Valley, they couldn’t claw their way to success after the visitors grabbed an early 14-0 lead, crossing for tries set up by strong running lines from flyhalf Randall Muller and blindside flank Frans Geldenhuys.
The Suzuki Game Changer Moment of the Match was delivered by Charlies‘ outside centre Chris-Will du Toit. It began with a break from a lineout on the halfway line that was followed by a series of quick and strong carries. Du Toit then put an exclamation point on the attack by bursting through the defence and going over the try line from close range.
While Robertson presented a formidable challenge, Charlie Hofmeyr, with the win, finished their season with 12 wins from 13 matches. A 17-19 loss to Hoërskool Bredasdorp was the only eyesore on their results sheet.
