Hilton College won the toss and elected to bowl first in their 50-over match against Paarl Boys’ High on the Hart-Davis Oval on Friday, the second day of the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week.

Boishaai‘s number three batsman, Roan Heyns, stymied Hilton’s bowlers, however, contributing a classy 86 runs off 127 balls, which featured nine fours and a six.

All the way down the order, at nine, Aden Batt played cautiously for a valuable unbeaten 47 off 77 balls, which helped the Western Cape outfit to 211 all out after 49.5 overs.

Hilton opening bowler Sechaba Gude caused Boishaai problems, capturing 4/47 from 10 overs. His fellow new ball bowler, Sange Qangule, picked up 2/47 from his 10.

In pursuit of 212, Hilton College put together some strong periods with the bat. Top-order batsmen Ben and Luke Wilson added 48 for the second wicket, with Ben striking five fours in his 36 off 51 balls, while Luke weighed in with 41 off 77.

Lower down the order at six and seven respectively, James Peattie and Cameron Hargroves joined forces for an 80-run sixth-wicket stand. Peattie hit four fours in the innings’ top score of 53 off 60 deliveries, while Hargroves made 33 off 41, hitting two fours.

Boishaai opener Ra-eez Isaacs led the bowling assault, knocking over 3/28 in 9/3 overs, while Ra’ed Fredericks did a tidy job, nabbing 2/20 in seven overs. Perennial wicket-taker Aden Batt bowled his full complement of 10 overs and snared 2/37 as Hilton was bowled out for 207 in a nail-biter, which left Paarl Boys’ High with a tight four-run victory.

After a confident seven-wicket win over Westville Boys’ High on Thursday, Grey College downed St Charles College by eight wickets in Pietermaritzburg on Friday.

The Bloemfontein boys took to the field after the toss favoured them, and Juan Maree responded with a fantastic  6/32 in 10 overs, inflicting massive damage on the home side’s batting effort.

Caleb Sharp, in at five, top-scored for St Charles, striking four fours in his 30 off 49 balls, which helped Saints to a pedestrian 125 all out after 40 overs.

Grey was relentless when chasing, taking only 22.2 overs to reach 127/2. Opener Christian Kind and number four batsman Daniel Hattingh saw them across the line with an unbeaten 62-run fourth-wicket stand.

Kind hammered six fours and a six in an innings of 51 runs off 54 balls, while Hattingh was more explosive, cracking five sixes and three fours in his 47 off only 27 deliveries.

Kaiyuran Naidoo was the lone wicket-taker for St Charles, collecting 2/34 in six overs.

On UKZN‘s Varsity 1 Oval, Hoërskool Waterkloof powered their way to a mighty 180-run triumph over Paarl Gimnasium.

They batted first, and  AJ de Villiers and Juan Swart paired for a second-wicket partnership of 93 runs. De Villiers top-scored with 76 off 97, hitting five fours, while Swart matched his boundary count in his innings of 56.

Rico van der Walt and Franco Schmidt, batting at four and five, tacked on another 66 runs. Van der Walt weighed in with 53 off 88, while Schmidt added 40 off 34.

Louwrens Pieterse‘s 1/18 in four overs was Paarl Gimnasium’s most economical return, and none of his teammates bettered his one wicket.

After 50 overs, Waterkloof totalled 268/5.

The Gimmies‘ reply never threatened Klofies. Opening batsman Enré van Zyl was the only Paarl Gim batsman to make it past 20 against a cohesive bowling unit.

Rivan Booysen laid waste to Gim’s batting, capturing a scintillating 6/17 from 9.4 overs. Vorster de Villiers hurt Gim with a tidy return of 2/4 from three overs, and Jean Cloete took 2/11 in five overs as the Bolanders were knocked over for only 88.

Next door, on the Varsity 2 Oval, Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) and the CSA Invitational XI met. After winning the coin flip, the CSA side opted to bowl, but it didn’t work out.

PRG opener Xander van Niekerk got his side going with 91 off only 82 balls, 13 of which he dispatched to the boundary. Janko Webb and Marcus Conradie, at three and four, then made 45 and 44 runs respectively.

Conradie and Van Niekerk also enjoyed an 84-run third-wicket stand.

Njabulo Mila bagged 3/51 in nine overs for the CSA Invitation XI, while opening bowler Ripfumelo Mabunda nearly matched him, taking 3/52 in 10 overs, and Sqalo Mbatha wrapped up the Western Cape side’s innings with 2/27 from 4.2 overs.

After 45.2 overs, PRG had tallied 303 all out. The composite side didn’t come close to challenging that total.

Blake Ross led the Paul Roos attack, snaring 3/32 in 10 overs, while Ruan Coetzee recorded 2/40 and Jean Winked returned a tidy 2/10 in four overs as the CSA team mustered 143 all out of 38.3 overs in reply, leaving Paul Roos with a handsome 160-run win.

Top-order batsman Oleboneng Scott belted six fours in his 40 off 66 deliveries, but Tshepang Laka was the only other CSA batsman to tally more than 20, finishing with 24 off 41 in an inning which included four fours.
