Affies and Garsfontein record rain Schools SA20 wins in double-quick time

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) made short work of the Eersterust Hub in the first round of the Titans’ rain Schools SA20 competition on Tuesday, while Hoërskool Garsfontein was only fractionally less decisive in a rampant win over the Atteridgeville Hub.

Eersterust chose to bat first against Affies, but they struggled at the crease and were in huge trouble on 17/5 halfway through their innings.

Matters didn’t improve from there, and they were skittled for just 30 in 15.5 overs, with Jerome Nation‘s six their best score.

Having two batsmen being run out did not help, while Paul Bester and Nico Loggenberg ripped through the Hub’s batting. Bester sent down 3.3 overs, two of which were maidens, and captured 3/3, while Loggenburg was miserly, returning 2/2 from four overs, with three maidens.

It took Affies only two-and-a-half overs to race to victory.

Eersterust hit three fours in their innings, but Affies’ openers, AJ Morkel and Ethan Williams, bettered that.

Morkel struck two in his 13 not out from seven deliveries, and Williams cracked a four and a six in his unbeaten 17 from eight balls.

Hoërskool Garsfontein vs Atteridgeville Hub

Hoërskool Garsfontein visited the Atteridgeville Hub and quickly made themselves at home, restricting the Hub to just 38/8 before chasing down the total in only 3.4 overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Atteridgeville lost their best batsman, Tshepang Laka, in the first over after he had hit one boundary. By the sixth over, they were in deep trouble on 21/6, with opening bowler Arrie Verster leading the Garsies’ onslaught.

He returned 3/14 from four overs, while his new ball partner, Katlego Lebelo, knocked over 2/11 in four.

The Hub side lost only two more wickets, but added just 17 more runs in another 5.1 overs before declaring their innings on 38/8. That was never going to challenge the Garsfontein batsmen.

Atteridgeville claimed one wicket, when Kholofelo Mogashoa bowled Ruan Cuyler for 11 in the second over, but the visitors were already a third of the way to victory.

It arrived in the fourth over, with Joshua de Villiers on six not out. At the other end, Rudolph Kirstein ended the match by blasting Mogashoa for six, which completed a hasty 23 not out off only nine balls, with two fours and two sixes.

Summarised Scorecards:

Eersterust Hub 30/10 (Jerome Nation 6; Paul Bester 3/3, Nico Loggenberg 2/2); Affies 32/0 (Ethan Williams 17*, AJ Morkel 13*). Affies won by 10 wickets.
