Wynberg Boys’ High demonstrated stoic discipline on Saturday in a 42-26 King Price Derby Series victory over Boland Landbou on Hawthornden Field.
Flyhalf Achmat Behardien was money, converting all six of Wynberg’s tries, while hooker Naeem Mohammed added to his hefty season’s try-scoring tally with another off the back of a rolling maul.
The King of the Match, though, was awarded to left wing Chad Campbell, who crossed for two tries.
For his second try, he didn’t catch the pass coming his way. Rather, he improvised from a deflection the ball took off one of the Landbou players, and toe-poked it through as it fell towards the ground. Then, he showed off his speed to dot down mere centimetres short of the dead-ball line.
The host’s only shortcoming was the two yellow cards they received shortly before and after the half-time whistle blew.
Boland Landbou brought plenty of physicality to the match. Left-wing Steyn Lamprecht bowled over an opposition defender to score a try in the corner, while prop Tiaan Malan exhibited similar tenacity at scrum time and also scored a try.
A tight first half finished with Wynberg 14-7 ahead. There was little in it, and it felt as if the Farmers could swing the momentum in their favour at any moment. However, the home team did enough in the last quarter of the match to create separation on the scoreboard.
That gave the final result a convincing look, but, in reality, it felt like it was anybody’s game for the majority of the contest.
The southern suburbs’ side has three derby matches left to conclude their season, with the first being a home tie against Bishops next Saturday. On the same day, Boland Landbou will front up against Paul Roos Gimnasium.
