It came as no surprise when flyhalf Caleb Seroot was crowned the King of the Match after he scored two tries in the last five minutes of play to lift the hosts, Boland Landbou, to an incredible 40-36 King Price Derby Series comeback win over Oakdale Landbou in the Farmers Derby on Saturday.
The Boland Landbou flyhalf also whipped out an assist for openside flank Juan Visagie to score a try. At another point in the contest, he gave out a one-handed offload that put inside centre Cobus Immelman into space, and the move ultimately resulted in a try for left-wing Steyn Lamprecht.
It was a second successive win for Boland Landbou over their agricultural rival, but the first for their Director of Rugby, Nico Breedt.
After he arrived from Maritzburg College at the beginning of the season, there was a period of adaptation, as is the norm under a new coach. The Paarl Farmers lost the first four games of their campaign, but they ended on a high note, scoring a thrilling victory as the underdog.
Juan Visagie, a great servant among the home side’s loose forwards, deservedly ended his high school rugby days with a brace of tries. He was relentless and played with his heart on his sleeve, delivering a mammoth shift, covering the field, and doing the dirty and lung-busting work, making cover tackles and challenging at the breakdowns.
Both sides scored tries from the rolling maul, with hooker Adrian Smith and inside centre André van der Merwe dotting down for the Bulle, while tighthead prop Tiaan Malan crashed over for the boys in black.
The Riversdal outfit put up a tough fight, but will feel disappointed that they couldn’t hold off the hosts in the last five minutes of play.
Despite the loss, Oakdale produced another strong season. While it didn’t match their outstanding 2025 campaign, a 27-21 victory over Hoërskool Outeniqua and a 13-13 draw with Paarl Boys’ High proved that they remain one of the top sides in the Western Cape and the country.
Despite going through some rough spells, Boland Landbou showed what they were capable of achieving in Saturday’s morale-boosting victory. Next season, they’ll be eager to build on the improvements they showed during their 2026 campaign.
