Grey College of Bloemfontein has announced a new Director of Hockey.
On Tuesday, the school named Michael Baiden as the new man entrusted with taking charge of the school’s hockey programme from 2027.
Baiden joins Grey College after serving as the Director of Hockey and first-team coach at Queen’s College in Komani.
He’s also a highly rated strength and conditioning coach, having served the SA Schools Hockey u18A team in that position at the u21 Inter-Provincial Tournament this year.
“Mr Baiden has been an international hockey player since 2015. He has played in the Commonwealth Games, World League tournaments, and six Africa Cup tournaments,” a statement released by Grey College read.
“He is also a SAHA-accredited level 3 coach and has been coaching provincial teams in the Free State and Border for the past six years.
“We cannot wait to have such an accomplished coach as part of our team.”
Before joining Queen’s, Baiden coached at St Andrew’s School in Bloemfontein. The Ghanaian international was also entrusted with leading several Border age group teams at SASHOC National events.
His return to Bloemfontein, where he attended the University of the Free State, brings him back to where he started coaching in the school environment. After a challenging season for Grey College, he’ll be tasked with uplifting the school’s programme to its usual heights.
