Du Plessis hits a half-century as Strand wins at Hugenote

Lady Luck favoured Hoërskool Hugenote (Wellington) on Saturday when the toss went their way, and they opted to bat first against Hoërskool Strand in a limited-overs match.

It was slow going for Hugenote, who crawled to 31/2 in the 13th over. However, when Curtley Liebenberg entered the fray, he provided the home side’s innings with some impetus, top-scoring with 33 off 47 balls, which included four fours and a six.

Batting at six, Zeeque Adams was the only home batsman to score at more than a run-a-ball, blasting two sixes in his 17 off 16.

The visitors’ Joshua Human troubled the Hugenote batsmen and captured a miserly 3/17. Blaze Tandy picked up 2/20, while Aqeeb Fanie wrapped up the Wellington side’s batting effort, claiming 2/24, as Hugenote was dismissed for 133 in 35.2 overs.

Eagles‘ opener Gustav du Plessis then set his side on course for victory, playing as patiently as a Test batsman in his innings of 54 from 141 balls, which included just two fours.

Hugenote’s Elshawn Fortuin was the most dangerous of the hosts’ attack, knocking over 3/31 in 6.4 overs.

Marco April provided good support, putting Strand under pressure with a constricting 1/10 from six overs, which included two maidens. Although he went without a wicket, Caydin May tied down the visitors, surrendering only 15 runs from his seven overs.

In the end, though, Hugenote needed more wickets, and Strand recorded a four-wicket win when they reached 134/6 after 42.4 overs.

Summarised Scorecard:

Hoërskool Hugenote 133/10 (Curtley Liebenberg 33; Joshua Human 3/17, Blaze Tandy 2/20, Aqeeb Fanie 2/24). Hoërskool Strand 134/6 (Gustav du Plessis 54; Elshawn Fortuin 3/31). Strand won by four wickets.
