Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) made short work of their neighbours, Hoërskool Stellenbosch, in a rain Schools SA20 knockout clash on Wednesday.

Playing at home, matters didn’t start well for Paul Roos, who lost both openers for a combined four runs. Their exit, however, meant Janko Webb made his way to the crease, and he turned up the heat, hammering five fours and seven sixes in a blistering 79 off only 39 balls.

Christiaan Fouché, batting at five, also struck at over two runs per ball, launching six maximums and two fours in his 67 off 33.

In just nine overs, the pair mustered a mighty 142 runs for the fourth wicket, averaging almost three runs a ball.

Nathan Phillips, who followed Fouché at the crease, weighed in with an entertaining cameo, cracking three fours and three sixes in a  lightning-quick 34 not out off just 10 balls.

Antoine de Beer was the pick of the visitors’ bowling unit, taking 2/23 in four overs in an otherwise expensive day for his side, whose time in the field ended with PRG on a daunting 249/7.

Then, when Hoërskool Stellenbosch batted, Paul Roos opening bowler, Morné Pauw, ripped into the visitors’ batting line-up, capturing 4/2 in 3.1 overs, which included two wicket-maidens, an extremely rare feat in the 20-over format.

Dion Slabber and Marcus Conradie also enjoyed cheap successes, chipping in with 2/7 and 2/14, respectively.

Number four batsman Ilan Myburgh was the lone visiting batsman to make it into double figures. He faced 29 balls and made 18 runs, including a four and a six.

However, Hoërskool Stellenbosch was dismissed for only 58 in the 19th over of their innings, giving Paul Roos a one-sided 191-run victory.

The home side, Wynberg Boys’ High, was directed to field first on the Jacques Kallis Oval after losing the toss to Norman Henshilwood High in a Wynberg derby.

Norman Henshilwood saw out their 20 overs at the crease, but struggled to create momentum, mustering only 57/5. With so many wickets in hand, they could perhaps have thrown caution to the wind late in their innings. Kito Samuels was their leading scorer, with 23.

Damien Harris led the Wynberg bowling attack, knocking over 3/15 in four overs.

It didn’t take the home side long to overhaul Norman Hinshelwood’s modest total. Yaqeen Gamieldien, who faced the first ball, clubbed Wynberg to victory, hitting seven fours and two sixes in a rapid, undefeated 47 off 20.

Batting at two runs per ball, the home side galloped to 60 without loss in five overs to win by 10 wickets.

The Tygerberg Regional Performance Centre (RPC) visited Curro Durbanville and opted to bat first after the coin flip favoured them in their rain Schools SA20 clash.

Opener Nathaniel Gerbach anchored their innings, going unbeaten and contributing 63 off 51 balls, with five fours and a six.

Dylan Hanekom, batting fifth in the order, was the only other RPC batsman to reach double figures, hitting two fours and a six in his useful 36 off 33 deliveries.

He and Gerbach put up 53 runs from their fourth-wicket stand, and Tygerberg RPC totalled 124/5 after their 20 overs.

Landseer Collen was the pick of the Curro bowlers, claiming 3/25 from four overs. He continued the good work with the bat, top-scoring for the home side with 32 from 39 balls, which included four fours and a six.

Opener Christiaan Vorster scored 27 off 36 and added 80 for the third wicket with Collen, but no other Curro batsmen made more than 10 runs.

When Collen departed, Curro Durbanville was on 96/3, with victory within their grasp. Matters darkened for the home side when they lost three wickets on 103 runs. Still, they pulled to within six runs of victory, but then lost their last four wickets without adding a run, bowled out for 119.

Zeke Johnson excelled against Curro’s tailenders, capturing 3/11 from four overs, while Kyle Hartzenberg, Nathaniel Gerbach, and Callan de Bruyn ran out three Curro batsmen, and that played a massive role in Tygerberg RPC’s stunning victory.
